Unfortunately, it was not enough for Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium in Ludwigshafen to win. We congratulate the Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium for their outstanding achievement and hope that the commitment shown has infected many young people.

During their geography lessons, pupils at Heinrich-Böll-Gymnasium set themselves the goal of implementing global climate protection aspects locally. This resulted in the class project “Sustainable city map for the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein”. To develop the Ludwigshafen city map, the city planners firstly researched data on restaurants, organic food and the weekly market, secondly on e-charging stations and car sharing and thirdly on second-hand stores and libraries. In addition, acquaintances, friends, family and companies were asked about sustainable places in the three city map categories of mobility, food and sharing. The information for the sustainable city plan was implemented using a geo-information system for recording spatial data. The pupils ceremoniously presented it to the representatives of the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. In addition, the high school has achieved major energy savings since its collaboration with the Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research: from 2008 to 2016, the school’s energy consumption fell by 26% or 167 tons of CO2 per year.
